Avoid These Drinks to Sleep Soundly While on Holiday

1) Caffeine

Bed bugs can be found anywhere, from the homes of the rich and famous to well-established hotels. It is important to check for bed bugs on arrival. Once you arrive in the room, the natural motion is to throw your luggage or jacket onto the bed. This is not a good move if you have not checked the bed bug situation, as you’ll risk bringing home an infested suitcase. We would recommend that your luggage is kept off the floor and away from the walls and furniture, and that you place your items into a clean bath tub.

There are different measures that you can take but, first of all, the most important thing is to check your bed.

How to check your bed for bed bugs

  • You will need a torch and a credit card before you begin your check.
  • Start examining your bed linen by removing all bedding.
  • Run your torch over the bed sheet to look for any evidence of excrement or blood stains. However, there may not be any signs if the bedding has just been changed.
  • Examine the surface of the mattress using the torch, once again looking for excrement and bloodstains, as well as for bed bugs’ skins that may have been shed, and eggs.
  • Take a credit card to run along the mattress seam, whilst holding it open to investigate with your torch. Look out for live bed bugs, skins or excrement.
  • Use the same process on buttons, traps and tags on the mattress.
  • Watch out for bed bugs whilst you flip your mattress and check all around the bed frame as you do so. It is recommended that this is done by two people to avoid strain or injury.
  • Move the bed away from the wall and use the torch to look for fleeing bugs, stains of excrement, or signs of blood spots.
  • Bed bugs may also be hiding in the crevices between pieces of wood or in the holes of screws, so thoroughly examine the underside of the bed frame, too.

Even if your baby is the best sleeper in the world, it may be a whole different story when you are not in the comfort of your own home. When you’re in a strange environment, things might be very different. It’s normal for babies and toddlers to test boundaries around sleep when they’re somewhere new.

If your baby cries or wakes up at odd times during the night, handle this behaviour in the same way that you would at home. If your child has a treasured comfort item, it will go a long way to helping them feel safe and secure enough to fall asleep in a strange environment. Even a familiar smell that is comforting may be all it takes for them to turn over and go back to sleep.

What is Jet Lag?

Jet lag is an imbalance in our body’s natural “biological clock” caused by travelling to different time zones. Our bodies work on a 24-hour cycle called “circadian rhythms.” These rhythms are measured by the distinct rise and fall of body temperature, plasma levels of certain hormones and other biological conditions. All of these are influenced by our exposure to sunlight and help determine when we sleep and when we wake1.

When travelling to a new time zone, our circadian rhythms are slow to adjust and remain on their original biological schedule for several days. This results in our bodies telling us it is time to sleep when it’s actually the middle of the afternoon. Or it makes us want to stay awake when it is late at night. 

Solutions to Ease Jet Lag

Change your watch to the destination’s time zone when you board the flight. The more you look at this, the more your brain is convinced of its new time zone. Once you arrive at your destination, always keep to your destination’s clock and not the time that it would be at home.

Exercise can also help with jet lag. By fitting in some last minute exercise, this will help to work out any stresses before your flight. If you can manage it, try to fit in exercise when you have arrived at your destination, too.

Say No to Caffeine

A massive trigger of jet lag is excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption when travelling. While sugary drinks may quench your thirst initially, the sugars and artificial sugars syphon out your body’s water storage by making your organs work harder to process them. It is important to stay hydrated when you are travelling, though on a long flight, in that case, you may want to opt for an aisle seat. Dehydration at an altitude causes toxins to build up quicker because oxygen is scarce and your body functions less efficiently, making you feel groggy after a long flight2.

Sleeping in transit

When trying to sleep on the plane, make sure you are doing so at the correct time of day at your destination. So if it is night time at your destination, try to sleep according to their times. Using a sleeping aid like Melatonin, as this is a brain hormone that helps control the body’s circadian rhythm, can help control your sleep. Also try this with some simple items like earplugs, a sleeping mask and a neck pillow.

Remember to Switch Off

A massively important piece of advice is to turn off all devices a couple of hours before sleep as the lights and activities can prevent you from falling asleep by distracting your mind. This creates a wake-up effect on the brain.
